Why was R.I.P.D such a colossal flop?

Main Post:

It made worldwide about $78 million, on a budget of $130, so there's no doubt that it was a monumental failure financially.

It has an average critic RT score of 14%, only one more than fecking Geostorm, and an audience rating of 38%, so a dud by any other name.

And yet, having finally got around to watch it, it's not shite.
It's not fantastic by any stretch; it's highly derivative, taking gigantic chunks of its look, effects and ideas from MIB, and there's barely an original thought in there, but it's not awful. It's everything you expect so although it's not worth raving about it, I didn't dislike it. It might not have delivered on the premise - "Jeff Fucking Bridges playing a dead cowboy in the present day", but it didn't exactly disappoint.

Ryan Renolds does his usual shtick, there's a solid performance from Jeff Bridges and supporting actors, and it's acceptable on every level, and yet it tanked spectacularly.

Looking at the other releases on or before July 2013, there was Despicable Me 2, Red 2, and The Wolverine was coming up - all sequels.

It didn't bring anything particularly new to the genre, but I can think of plenty of films that have fared far better with less originality.

So, does anyone actually really love or hate it, and a special bonus question...

What's the single most profitable and popular derivative pile of crap that just shouldn't have worked but somehow did?

Is this the one where living people saw Jeff Bridges as a blonde bombshell and Ryan Reynolds as a little old Asian man? That set-up seemed like the opposite of funny to me, so I avoided this one.

"You should watch them back to back as a double feature, and then hang yourself."

"Ok. And then...and then Logan Jones will film me, or whatever the fuck that prick's name is."

If there's someone out there named Logan Jones, please move to Milwaukee so you can be there to film Mike when it happens.

How many movies have you watched?

Main Post:

If you keep track of the movies you watch as I do, how many have you seen and how old are you? I haven't seen as many movies as I would like, altough I'm kinda young (19). I have seen just almost 800, between college, and well... life, sometimes is kinda hard to find a moment wo watch movies. How do you find the time to watch a film?

How you keep track of the movies you watch? (so many questions, I know)

Damn, this minimum of characters is hard to fill.

Here's some random Kubrick quote:

“The very meaninglessness of life forces man to create his own meaning. Children, of course, begin life with an untarnished sense of wonder, a capacity to experience total joy at something as simple as the greenness of a leaf; but as they grow older, the awareness of death and decay begins to impinge on their consciousness and subtly erode their joie de vivre, their idealism – and their assumption of immortality. As a child matures, he sees death and pain everywhere about him, and begins to lose faith in the ultimate goodness of man. But, if he’s reasonably strong – and lucky – he can emerge from this twilight of the soul into a rebirth of life’s elan. Both because of and in spite of his awareness of the meaninglessness of life, he can forge a fresh sense of purpose and affirmation. He may not recapture the same pure sense of wonder he was born with, but he can shape something far more enduring and sustaining. The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent; but if we can come to terms with this indifference and accept the challenges of life within the boundaries of death – however mutable man may be able to make them – our existence as a species can have genuine meaning and fulfillment. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.”

I keep track of all the films I watched on rateyourmusic.com. I'm 25, and if you're only count feature length films, then I've seen 1500. I would also keep track of them on an excel file, and organize them based on year. Then I would try to fill in gaps of years I hadn't seen a film for. For example, have you seen a film for the year 1944? What about 1970? What about 1910? After a while I had watched at least 3 films for each year.

Back a few years I ago I was with you at 700-800 films, but then I decided to watch at least one movie a day for an entire year. Most days I easily watched two. I would watch about an hour of a 90 minute turning my lunch break at work, then another half an hour during some random point before I left. Then I would watch another film before I went to sleep.

On the weekends, I would try to watch a film in the theater and I had AFI that played classic/foreign films to make it more interesting.
